Coastal Deep Hole

On December 20th we headed about 15 miles down the coast to Deep Hole (one of my favorite's). Deep Hole is not only great for hunting but also photography and sightseeing. Deep Hole is more like what the islands used to look like as there is much less pressure from divers and fishing there. The only problem with Deep Hole is it is much more weather dependent. On this day we started out at Sea Fans in an area about 80-85 ft deep. Some of the better diving at deep Hole is 70'-120'. Sea Fans has lots of different colored sea fans and some large fish such as sheephead, calico, barred sand bass and lingcod. The structure is large rocks and boulders with some small walls. Our 2nd dive was at newly named "Sweet Spot" by Thomas (17 years old) who caught 6 bugs here. This area is about 65'-70' with more bugs and smaller fish. The reef was about the same with large rocks. Our 3rd dive was at a new spot that had smaller reefs with sand between them. There was lots of small critters here and it was a good spot for photos. This spot was about 40'-45' ft deep. All 3 dives had vis from 15'-25' and the water was low to mid 50's. The topside conditions were nice, but it was cold. After 3 good dives and some limits of lobsters we were back at the dock by 3:30pm.

Anacapa TBM Avenger Plane Wreck

On November 17th we had a trip to the TBM Avenger off the front side of middle Anacapa. The day before had very bad Santa Ana's, but on this day things were looking much better. There were 8 divers on board some with doubles and scooters. The plane is at about 120' lying in the sand and close to a nice reef. Also on this day they had a slight current and 60+ vis, great conditions. The dive went well and afterwards we headed to some coastal wrecks. One dive was at a wreck and another was at the La Jannelle pieces. Both dives were about 80-90 ft. with some more good conditions. After the 3 dives we were back at the dock by 3:00pm.

Santa Cruz Island-Peacock Wreck

It was an awesome day on Saturday 11/1. The weather was light rain, hard rain, lighting and the sky looked incredible all day. There were 8 divers aboard the Sunfish and I know they went home very happy. Our 1st dive was a short ride to a wreck in 85'. There is not much know about this wreck and it has no name. There was no current and about 25' of vis with the ocean being calm. There was lighting close by before this dive so we waited for a few for the front to pass us. we then headed over to Santa Cruz Island-Scorpion's bay area were the Peacock is. The Peacock is an old mine sweeper and is a very cool dive, it is 65' deep. There are 2 doorways that you can swim thru, and some type of tower that rises about 10' off the wreck. There is nothing to penetrate. The conditions were outstanding, probably the best I have seen (topside of course). There was at least 40' of vis, no current and high 50's water temp. There are lots of cool critters to see on the Peacock and it has the largest Spanish Shawls I have seen (and lots of them). Our 3rd dive was at a place a short way's to the south that looked interesting. The conditions were good and the site had lots of rocky reef, but no kelp. Some were able to get some very nice scallops. We then headed home with some of the divers enjoying our nice ice cold free beer. We were back at the dock about 3:30pm. It was another fun day on the Sunfish.

Oct.18th, 2008-V.C.College Class Boat

The Ventura College advanced dive class uses the Sunfish for it's class boat trips. This. trip was setup for a deep dive, navigation and a drift dive. We had almost a full boat. We first tried the backside of Anacapa, but there was just to much current for a deep dive (skills dive)so we ended up on the front side at outside Frenchy's in 115'ft. This worked out good with a few even seeing a Sunfish (Mola-Mola)and the vis was about 15'-20'.The 2nd dive was at East Cat Rock in 30' ft of water with about 15'-20' of vis. Some of the divers did navigation skills and a few others went looking for bugs (none taken). Our 3rd dive was a drift dive at South Central(backside of Anacapa, close to Aquarium). This was a great dive with good rock structure and about 25' of vis., but very few bugs were seen and only 1 was taken.! person did see a Black Sea Bass. I have personally seen 11 Black Sea Bass at one time at this site. That was an extraordinary sighting for me. Ken

The Sunfish is planning to start having some 1 day drift dive classes on the boat based on the way the college class is taught. The V.C. College advanced dive class has done many drift dives on the Sunfish. Drift diving is the "Fun and lazy way to dive". Check out the Sunfish calender and newsletter for class schedule.

Sept. 21st, 2008-Grace Oil Rig Trip

We have done quite a few oil rig trips and this was the 1st with our new load limit of 16 divers. It worked out sooo much better with fewer divers, more room, easier to fill tanks and lots of room on the Sunfish. Anyways, we had a full boat and the condition's were good, but with a bit more current (east to west)then other trips. The topside conditions were great, little swell and sunny skies. We got 3 dives in with everyone getting scallops who wanted them. There was a thermocline at about 70' were the vis. really opened up. Everyone had a great time.---Ken

Sept. 6th, 2008- Wreck Trip

We had a very light load of 8 people, most were from Bakersfield. I (Ken) to was diving this day, finally. Our 1st dive was a sailboat at about 90'deep. The sailboat was about 45 ft. long with most of it covered by sand and it did have some Metridums on it.The vis. was about 10'. The 2nd dive was the Kelp Cutter at about 90' deep. This is one of my favorite dives. We had about 25' ft, of vis. The next and last dive was the Connie Marie, a 50' purse seiner fishing boat. The upper half is still exposed with the rest buried in the sand. The wheelhouse is still accessible along with the galley area. We had about 15'-20' vis and it was a cool dive. What a great day of diving some local wrecks.
